The Summit of Mediterranean Cities and Local Governments

The Summit of Mediterranean Cities and Local Governments

15.09.2008

Dear friends and partners.

We are delighted to invite you to participate in the inaugural Mediterranean Cities and Local Government Summit taking place on 2 – 3 October 2008, at the Palacio de Congresos de Malaga.

In 2007, WISeKey presented the Euro-African Hub initiative within the framework of Malaga Valley's activities (read article http://www1.wisekey.com/news/080728-MediterraneanDigitalSpace.aspx).

This initiative has now taken on a new dimension, focusing on the objectives laid out by President of the Spanish government, Zapatero at the Union for the Mediterranean (UPM) recently organized by President Sarkozy in Paris. Zapatero, invited European and Mediterranean leaders to the Mediterranean Cities Summit in Malaga, with the objective of promoting a truly Mediterranean digital space.

Along the same line, the efforts made by the Malaga City government, Fond de Solidarite Numerique (FSN), WISeKey, OISTE.org, Malaga Valley have culminated in the Mediterranean Cities and Local Governments Summit.

This Summit will advocate the essential role of information and communications technologies (ICTs) for strengthening the socio-economic and cultural cooperation and development in the region with the objective making of Malaga the Hub for the Mediterranean Digital Space (EDM).

WISeKey and OISTE.ORG will support the government of Malaga become the new Euro-Mediterranean Hub (EDM), with the aim of optimizing economic-social-cultural relations between Europe and the Mediterranean Countries. This will be accomplished by using the infrastructure of the Technology Park of Malaga (PTA) and Malaga Valley and its unique geopolitical location. The EDM aims to be financed by private sector, the European Union (EU) and the Spanish government.

The Hub will become both a new generation-platform for optimizing commercial, technological and cultural links between the European Union and Africa, and also meeting-point and a place for research and study. The Hub is a natural step following the significant investments already deployed to convert Malaga into a leader of Euro-Mediterranean initiatives and become an incubator service repository for cities that do not yet have the means and skills to launch full applications establishing a local hybrid (installed in the city of reference).

Regional Governments, Municipalities and leading technological companies will have the opportunity to discuss and build together the EDM consisting of a suite of online services that Mediterranean cities represented by their mayors will be able to customize and integrate into their current government solutions with a single entry point – the "I am Mediterranean" citizen identity”, providing high-level services to citizens by using Malaga and its PTA (as a regional HUB) via a Citizen Service Platform.

We welcome to Malaga, leaders from the public and private sector that are eager to contribute to the development of the objectives of the EDM and become essential actors of the Mediterranean co-operation and the creation of a truly Mediterranean digital space.

Today, European Union leaders (France, Spain, Switzerland, and Bulgaria) and Majors from most Mediterranean cities (Malaga, Barcelona, Lyon, Geneva, Cairo, Genoa, Paris, Tanger, Tunes, Istanbul) and many others have already confirmed their presence to the Malaga event.

Please join us to make of this Summit the event of the Mediterranean region.

I hope that this proposal is of interest to you and look forward to hearing from you.

With warm regards,

Carlos Moreira
